Why King Charles declines Prince ceremony for William

Monarch Charles’ decades-long quest to become monarch came to an end in 2022, following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Of course, his first year as monarch did not go as expected. Charles was diagnosed with can:cer in February 2023, and he is still undergoing tre:atme:nt today.

That has compelled Prince William to fill in for the king on multiple occasions in recent months, providing him a taste of what to expect when he eventually ascends the throne.

Unfortunately, Charles and William’s relationship appears to have shifted slightly as a result of this. And now it appears as if the king has had a plan for William all along–because there is one thing he doesn’t want to happen again.

King Charles paused his can:cer tre:atme:nt for Australia-Samoa trip in October

Charles naturally stepped back from his royal duties while undergoing can:cer tre:atme:nt. Buckingham Palace has not disclosed any information on the type of can:cer Charles has, nor has it been particularly forthcoming with specifics about his condition.

In the previous year, there have been concerns regarding Charles’ ability to continue as king due to his cancer, especially since he is not growing any younger. Nonetheless, the king has continued to do many of his duties, and in late October, he and Queen Camilla visited Australia and Samoa. The travel from Australia to Samoa was a big test for King Charles’ health.

King Charles’ emotional words on his can:cer in Christmas speech

Charles’ ability to temporarily suspend his can:cer therapy was a positive sign that he was doing well. According to royal expert Jennie Bond, the king prepared himself for “testing.”

The king’s doctors would undoubtedly accompany him on the Australia-Samoa journey, but they would not be there only to support his can:cer tre:atme:nt.

Charles is anticipated to continue his can:cer tre:atme:nt in 2025. He has continued to carry out his royal duties in recent months, and it has been a while since the last update.

The king brought up the subject in his Christmas speech. The king responded: “I am deeply grateful, too, to all those who have offered us their own kind words of sympathy and encouragement.”

King Charles & Princ William’s dynamic have “shifted,” source says

Some say that Charles should abdicate and allow Prince William to take over the throne. Unfortunately, according to US Weekly, the question has reached the royals and significantly “shifted” the relationship between Charles and his eldest son. Palace sources informed the US news outlet that their relationship has been fraught with friction.

Prince William, like King Charles, has prepared “for when his ascension happens.”

Following King Charles’ coronation, royal aides began planning Prince William’s ascension. However, after the king’s can:cer diagnosis, those plans were accelerated.

“He’s a lot weaker and tires easily”
Charles has waited his entire life to ascend the throne, so he obviously does not want to abdicate. A royal insider told Woman’s Day that he “came to terms” with his short-lived reign years ago.

The insider went on to claim that, while Charles is hesitant to give his son William too much power and space, he has met with him privately to discuss the future.

At the same time, William and Kate Middleton “have been preparing for their future roles” much sooner than expected.

King Charles’s new plan for William revealed

It’s safe to assume that King Charles would not wish to abdicate, and who could blame him? Even though he is confident that his son will excel as monarch, Charles is unlikely to stand aside while he is still alive.

Still, when crowned Prince of Wales, Charles was installed in a ceremony comparable to the coronation, although much smaller. King Charles’ appointment as Prince of Wales was very contentious. According to Welsh writer Huw Thomas, author of Charles: the King and Wales, Charles’ negative experience during his installation as Prince of Wales caused him to decide that William would not face the same procedure.

“The monarchy is built on tradition”
Even though Prince William has not been formally ‘installed’ as the Prince of Wales, this does not mean that the title will disappear. When William ascends to the throne, Prince George is expected to resume his previous title.
