Since being sworn in as the 47th president on January 20, Donald Trump has signed several executive orders. These include withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization, as well as delaying a TikTok ban. One of the most controversial orders targets birthright citizenship. Trump’s order would prevent children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents from automatically obtaining U.S. citizenship. However, this faces significant legal hurdles, as birthright citizenship is protected by the 14th Amendment. This change would affect children of unauthorized immigrants and those on temporary visas. Trump’s youngest son, Barron, born to Melania Trump in 2006, is not impacted, as both his parents had lawful status at the time of his birth. Legal challenges are expected if the order moves forward.
