The Truth About Orange Stains on Towels That Stay Put

I first noticed a strange neon-orange blotch on my favorite grey towel. It looked more like a bleach mark than a stain and didn’t come out in the wash. Soon, more towels were affected, and I realized the culprits were everyday products.

1. Benzoyl Peroxide – Found in acne treatments, it bleaches fabric on contact, especially dark towels.
2. Iron in Water – Mineral-rich (often well) water can leave rusty spots.
3. Hair Products/Self-Tanners – Pigments in shampoos or tanners can rub off and stain towels.
4. Cleaning Products – Surface sprays or wipes with bleach can transfer to towels via your hands.

How I Prevent It Now:

  • Use white towels for skincare

  • Let products dry before toweling off

  • Treat water or use a rust remover

  • Keep separate towels for hair
