In the 1970s, Brian Connolly became the electrifying frontman of The Sweet, powering glam-rock hits like “The Ballroom Blitz” and “Block Buster!” as the band sold 50 million records and scored 13 UK Top-20 singles.
Born in 1945 and adopted as an infant, Connolly rose from a difficult childhood to global fame, but success came with a price. Heavy drinking, health problems, and band tensions led to his departure in 1979. Multiple heart attacks and mounting financial trouble followed, yet he kept touring under the name Brian Connolly’s Sweet, even as illness weakened his voice and mobility. His final performance was in late 1996; he died in February 1997 at age 51.
Connolly’s story is both glitter and tragedy—proof that fame can dazzle, but its cost can be devastating.
