Shock as grandmother accused in deaths of brothers, 6 and 7

Police have arrested 66-year-old Kathleen Heggs for the alleged murder of her grandsons, Max Johnson, 7, and Sam Johnson, 6, whose bodies were found in separate rooms of their home in Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia.

Two officers forced entry after a concerning message was sent to the Department of Communities and Justice. Upon arrival, Heggs reportedly attempted to harm herself.

She has been charged with two counts of murder and was refused bail. She is set to appear at Parramatta Bail Court.

The boys had been living with their grandmother for 11 months prior to the tragedy. NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident “incomprehensible.”

A candlelit vigil will be held at Neilson Park to honor the brothers. Police confirmed no ongoing threat to the public and believe no one else was involved.

Assistant Commissioner Brett Holland added, “These things shock small country towns… the death of two children is devastating.”
