Senate Passes $9 Billion Budget Rollback as Focus on Government Efficiency Grows

Senate Approves $9B Spending Cut in Narrow Vote, In a 51–48 vote, the U.S. Senate approved a $9 billion federal spending cut backed by the Trump administration, aiming to reduce waste and refocus funds on essential services.

The bill slashes foreign aid and eliminates funding for NPR and PBS, prompting backlash from some Republicans. Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski opposed the measure, citing concerns over cuts to vital programs like clean water and emergency broadcasting.

Senator Mark Kelly proposed an amendment to reduce cuts to $6 billion, while Murkowski sought to protect public media. Still, supporters called the rollback modest—less than 0.1% of the budget—and a step toward fiscal responsibility.

The bill now heads back to the House for final negotiations.
