Never heard of this…

If your child says their tongue feels itchy after eating strawberries, it could be Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). This mild reaction happens when the immune system confuses proteins in certain fruits—like strawberries—with pollen. Symptoms usually include itching or tingling in the mouth, lips, or throat and often appear within minutes of eating raw fruit.

Children are more prone to OAS due to developing immune systems. Interestingly, cooked or processed strawberries often don’t trigger symptoms.

While OAS is typically mild, it’s important to monitor reactions and consult an allergist—especially if symptoms worsen or involve trouble breathing.

Understanding OAS can help parents manage symptoms, make safer food choices, and ensure their child stays healthy and confident around food.
