Father’s Day was meant to be a simple, happy day. But my daughter’s shocking revelation turned my world upside down. Here’s my story.
Sixteen years ago, I met Sue in a bookstore where I worked. She had a warmth that drew me in, and with her was Ellen, a lively two-year-old. Sue and I quickly fell in love, and I soon adopted Ellen. We had many happy years until Sue died in a car accident, or so I thought.
Years later, on Father’s Day, Ellen gave me a wooden chest filled with letters from Sue, dated years after her “death.” One letter read, “If you’re reading this, it means our little Ellen has grown up and you’re ready to know the truth.”
Ellen tearfully revealed that Sue hadn’t died but had left us, forcing Ellen to keep it a secret. Sue was also seeing someone else. Despite the betrayal, Ellen assured me, “You’re the BEST father anyone could ask for.”
Ellen’s real gift was a new pickup truck, bought with Sue’s inheritance. Her actions showed her deep gratitude and love. I couldn’t be angry with her; instead, our bond grew stronger. Ellen will always be my daughter, no matter what.
