Jason and I were together for 15 years, and though we never married, my family supported him when his was absent, helping him finish school and later, when he bought a house. When Jason was diagnosed with cancer, I helped him manage the mortgage and cared for him until his passing in March. A month later, his family reappeared, demanding the house keys, bringing a lawyer with them. However, as a lawyer myself, I revealed Jason had left them an inheritance, but on one condition: they had to read his letter aloud. The letter expressed his anger at their abandonment, stating they were “too late” to show love or support, and he had ensured I would be taken care of, not them.
