Melania Trump and VP JD Vance Criticized Over Reactions During National Prayer Service

First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance are facing backlash following their reactions during a significant church service on Tuesday, January 21. The event, a Service of Prayer for the Nation held at the Washington National Cathedral, was part of a series of ceremonies marking Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States.

A Controversial Moment

During the service, Bishop LaTrelle Easterling delivered a heartfelt prayer for the most vulnerable in society, saying, “God, who we cannot love, unless we love our neighbor, let us pray for the most vulnerable in our community and lead us to be present with them in their suffering.”

As the Bishop spoke, observers noted that Melania Trump and JD Vance appeared to share a lighthearted moment just prior, which some interpreted as inappropriate laughter or smiling during a solemn appeal.

Critics on social media were quick to react.

One user wrote:

“JD Vance starts laughing, and Melania Trump is smiling at the National Prayer Service when they hear, ‘let us pray for the most vulnerable.’ Vile.”

Another commented:

“And when the Bishop said, ‘let’s pray for the most vulnerable,’ with Vance and Melania smiling and laughing… the message she said went right over their heads.”

Supporters argued that the moment was taken out of context, suggesting their interaction occurred just before the prayer began and was unrelated to its content.

Reverend Budde’s Viral Sermon

Later in the service, Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, delivered a sermon urging President Trump to show compassion and mercy, particularly toward LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants.

Addressing the President directly, she stated:

“Mr. President, millions have put their trust in you. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families, some who fear for their lives.”

She continued to advocate for immigrants, many of whom contribute to essential industries:

“They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals.”

Trump’s Response

President Trump quickly responded to Reverend Budde’s comments, taking to his Truth Social platform in the early hours of the morning to issue a scathing critique.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater,” he wrote. “She brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone and not compelling or smart.”

He accused Budde of failing to address the issue of undocumented immigrants committing crimes and called her statements inappropriate. Trump further criticized the service, branding it “boring and uninspiring” and stating, “She and her church owe the public an apology!”

Public Reaction and Ongoing Debate

The reactions to the church service, including those of Melania Trump, JD Vance, and President Trump, have sparked heated discussions across social media and news outlets. Some view the controversy as a distraction, while others see it as indicative of the administration’s approach to sensitive issues.

As the newly inaugurated President begins his term, moments like these underscore the heightened scrutiny surrounding the Trump administration and the polarized political climate in the United States.
