Colon cancer rates are rising, especially in those under 35, with cases nearly doubling since 1990. While the exact cause is unclear, factors like diet, lifestyle, and consumption of ultra-processed foods are thought to contribute. Alcohol use and obesity are also risk factors, with insufficient calcium intake being a primary concern. Cameron Kalunian, diagnosed at 35, experienced blood in his stool, a major symptom of colon cancer. After tests, a large tumor was found at his colorectal junction. He underwent successful surgery in 2019 and was in remission within a month. Cameron’s early diagnosis, due to noticing blood, led to Stage 1 cancer, which was treatable. His experience highlights that colon cancer can affect younger people, and early detection can lead to better outcomes.
