Kansas City is facing an unprecedented tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, with 67 confirmed cases as of January 24, 2025. Wyandotte County has the majority, with 60 cases. First reported in 2024, this outbreak has become the largest in U.S. history due to the rapid spread. Despite the severity, health officials report a “very low risk” to the general public, urging continued vigilance. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is collaborating with the CDC to track, treat, and prevent new infections. While TB cases statewide have significantly decreased, the outbreak remains a concern. Active TB cases are being treated, and with proper medication, individuals are no longer contagious after 10 days. Efforts are focused on containment and preventing further spread.
