**”Twisters” Shakes Up the Box Office**
The latest film, “Twisters,” continues to captivate audiences with its thrilling tornado action. This sequel to the 1996 original benefits from advanced technology, creating a more realistic portrayal of storm chasers.
The first “Twister” featured storm chasers, played by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, who risk their lives to improve tornado warning systems. Director Jan de Bont focused on realism, working closely with NOAA and storm chasers. He noted, “If you don’t make them real, then you don’t believe the rest.”
Experts have analyzed scenes from “Twisters” for accuracy. Meteorologist Reed Timmer confirmed the depiction of wind turbines breaking apart is realistic, but criticized the film’s twin tornadoes for scientific inaccuracy. He also highlighted the dangers of seeking shelter under overpasses due to the “Bernoulli effect.”
Interestingly, some dramatic scenes, like exploding a tornado, are purely fictional. Despite this, meteorologist Michael Seger praised the film’s accurate tornado graphics, reflecting strong collaboration with experts.
“Twisters” premiered on July 19, 2024, earning $80.5 million domestically.
