He was the first man in the world to give birth – 16 years later, he looks like this

Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made history as the world’s first transgender man to become pregnant. Born female, Thomas transitioned to male, and his life took a groundbreaking turn with the birth of his daughter, Susan. The news garnered global attention, but it was met with significant backlash and death threats from those opposed to a man giving birth.

Despite the challenges, Thomas remained true to himself. His family now includes Susan and two sons, reflecting his ongoing journey and resilience.

Thomas, born Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino in Hawaii in 1974, began identifying as male at ten and started testosterone therapy at twenty-three. After undergoing breast removal surgery in 2002, he chose to keep his female reproductive organs, enabling his later pregnancies. In 2006, he paused testosterone to conceive with his then-wife, Nancy, overcoming fertility issues and delivering Susan in 2008.

Now remarried to Amber, Thomas lives in Oregon with their blended family, including his children and Amber’s grandchild. He works as a stockbroker and continues to share his story, advocating for the right to parenthood regardless of gender.
