On January 29, a horrific air disaster unfolded over Washington, D.C., when an American Airlines flight collided with a Black Hawk helicopter. The crash, which occurred as Flight 5342 was preparing to land at Reagan National Airport, has resulted in fears of over 60 fatalities. Both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, triggering an extensive search for survivors. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered. Among the victims was 26-year-old Spencer Lane, a member of the U.S. figure skating team. Authorities are now shifting from rescue to recovery operations, and the cause remains under investigation.
