Experts warn there are phrases to look out for that could mean someone has dementia

Dementia, a condition marked by irreversible cognitive decline, is difficult to detect in its early stages. Currently, over 55 million people worldwide are diagnosed, and the number is rising. Dementia affects memory, concentration, and daily tasks, and while there’s no cure, early detection is crucial for support. Common signs include memory loss, confusion, and mood swings. A lesser-known symptom involves speech changes. People with early-stage dementia may struggle with conversation, forget words, or substitute incorrect terms, like calling a “watch” a “hand-clock” or a “newspaper” a “book.” These speech difficulties are hard to distinguish from normal aging, but they are important to recognize for early diagnosis and intervention.
