The FDA has recalled Turkana Food Inc.’s dried apricots after the New York State Department of Agriculture found undeclared sulfites on the product label. Sulfites, used as preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in sensitive individuals.
The affected apricots carry LOT number 440090478-15-333 on the bottom and UPC 2539560010on a top sticker. Distributed in over 15 U.S. states, including New York, Florida, and California, the product should not be consumed. No illnesses have been reported, but consumers are urged to return it for a full refund. Sulfite sensitivity affects about 4% of Americans—roughly 13 million people—causing symptoms from hives to anaphylaxis. Turkana Food Inc. has not yet commented on the recall.
