The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new program offering illegal immigrants free commercial flights and a $1,000 stipend to voluntarily leave the United States.
Officials say the initiative will significantly cut costs for taxpayers, with voluntary self-deportation expected to cost about $4,500 per person—roughly 70% less than the $17,000 it currently costs to arrest, detain, and deport an individual.
The stipend will only be issued after DHS verifies the individual has left the country. Participants must apply through the CBP Home app, which DHS expects will dramatically boost the number of self-removals, currently only in the hundreds.
According to DHS, individuals actively using the app to arrange their departure will be deprioritized for detention or removal efforts.
“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News. “This program provides safer outcomes for both law enforcement and migrants, while saving taxpayers money.”
DHS emphasized that voluntary departure improves one’s chances of legally returning in the future. The agency is urging eligible migrants to “Download the CBP Home App TODAY and self-deport.”
