Former President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 death row inmates to life in prison just before leaving office. In response, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is pushing to reverse these decisions. Bondi wrote to DOJ employees, stating that the commutations undermined the justice system and denied victims’ families the promised justice. She directed U.S. attorneys to pursue state-level charges for these cases, where legally possible. Additionally, Bondi emphasized the need for victims’ families to have a public platform to express their views. Biden’s actions in December 2020 aimed to prevent executions under the Trump administration, leaving only three mass killers on death row. Bondi also recently filed a lawsuit against New York State for violating federal law regarding illegal immigrants.
