An unexpected source—Pizza Hut—helped a woman in Florida escape a dangerous situation.
Cheryl Treadway of Highlands County, Florida, ordered a small hand-tossed pizza with pepperoni on May 4, 2015, using the Pizza Hut app on her phone. Yes, a note informing the store owners that she was being held captive and requesting their assistance was also included.
Ethan Nickerson, Treadway’s boyfriend, was holding her and her kids at knifepoint. The local Pizza Hut called the police after she placed her order, and they came to her house and took the boyfriend into custody.
Although Treadway’s story ends happily, many others don’t have the same luck. One in three women (and one in four men) have experienced physical abuse at the hands of an intimate partner, either past or present, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
