Longtime CNN Anchor Criticizes Democrats Over Pete Hegseth Hearing

Chris Cuomo, former CNN anchor now with NewsNation, sharply criticized the Senate Armed Services Committee’s hearing on Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary. He accused lawmakers of shifting focus from critical national security issues to divisive cultural matters, particularly targeting Democratic senators. They scrutinized Hegseth’s personal history, including past marital issues, instead of discussing pressing defense concerns.

Cuomo condemned the hearing as a missed opportunity, calling out the toxic political culture that prioritizes personal scandals over substantive policy discussions. “The real adversary isn’t Hegseth—it’s the toxic political culture we’ve created,” Cuomo stated, highlighting how partisan bickering derails meaningful dialogue.

One heated moment involved Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who questioned Hegseth about his third marriage, specifically a child he fathered before divorcing his second wife. Hegseth responded by acknowledging his mistakes but emphasizing his personal redemption through faith. Cuomo found the line of questioning irrelevant, arguing it had no bearing on Hegseth’s qualifications. He also noted the hypocrisy of Kaine, who defended Bill Clinton amid similar scandals.

Cuomo criticized both parties for neglecting national security threats like the rising risks from China, Russia, and cyberattacks. “Our vulnerability is the real story,” he concluded, urging more focus on defense.
