Olympic Runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, Tragically Dies after Conflict with Boyfriend: Details

Rebecca Cheptegei, the acclaimed Ugandan Olympic runner, tragically died following a brutal attack by her former boyfriend. Admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Cheptegei suffered severe burns covering 80% of her body from an assault on September 1, 2024. Despite the best efforts of medical staff and plans for her transfer to Nairobi for specialized treatment, she succumbed to full organ failure early on September 5.

The attack, reportedly involving petrol, occurred as Cheptegei was returning from church. Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei condemned the violence, stressing that such acts are unacceptable. Ugandan lawyer Donald Rukare and Cheptegei’s family have expressed deep sorrow, calling for privacy and support during this tragic time. Ann Cheptegei, a family member, thanked supporters and provided details on how to contribute to her hospital and funeral expenses. The loss of Rebecca Cheptegei, a beloved athlete, has been met with profound grief and calls for justice.
