The Mistaken Congratulations That Changed Everything

I thought I was offering a warm, harmless gesture — a quick “congratulations” when I spotted my boss, Michael, having dinner with his wife. He had mentioned the day before that he was going to be a father, so naturally, I turned to his wife and shared the happy news. But the way her expression collapsed — color draining, eyes widening — told me instantly I’d made a terrible mistake.

Michael gently grabbed my arm and leaned in, voice low and strained. “She is not pregnant,” he said, the unfinished silence between us heavy with something unspoken. His wife fought back tears, trying to smile through obvious pain.

I apologized, stumbling over my words, but the damage was done.
That moment taught me how easily good intentions can collide with hidden heartbreak — and how much we never know about someone else’s story.
