Legendary Figure Passes, Leaving Global Grief

He helped define the sound of an era, shaping Supertramp into one of rock’s most recognizable bands through his voice, piano playing, and songwriting. Rick Davies’ work on classics like “The Logical Song,” “Goodbye Stranger,” and “Take the Long Way Home” left a lasting mark on music fans worldwide. Born in Swindon, England, he struggled in school but showed an early gift for music — something his mother said was “the only thing he was any good at.” That talent led him to co-found Supertramp with Roger Hodgson in 1969.

The band’s rise was swift, and Breakfast in America made them global stars, earning Grammy nominations and producing multiple enduring hits. Though Hodgson later left, Davies carried Supertramp forward for decades. Known for his warmth and dedication, he shared more than fifty years with his wife, Sue, who stood by him through health challenges and career highs.
