The Yardbirds’ star dies at age 79

Chris Dreja, a founding member of the legendary British rock band The Yardbirds, has died at 79. His passing was confirmed by family and bandmate Jimmy Page, who paid tribute to his artistry and lasting influence.

Born in Surbiton in 1945, Dreja co-founded The Yardbirds in 1963 and remained the only member to appear on every release. Starting as a rhythm guitarist before shifting to bass, his steady musicianship anchored a band that launched Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Page himself. Their songs — “For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul” among them — helped define the British Invasion.

After music, Dreja pursued photography, famously capturing Led Zeppelin’s early lineup. A quiet pioneer, his legacy continues to shape modern rock.
