Donald Trump’s UK state visit ended with drama when Marine One made an emergency landing. The president and First Lady Melania were flying to Stansted Airport on September 18 when a “minor hydraulic issue” forced the helicopter to divert to Luton, 54 miles away.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the landing was precautionary and the couple later boarded a support helicopter, arriving 20 minutes late. Emergency services were on standby at Luton.
The incident came a day after Trump met King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, where body language experts noted signs of Charles’s impatience as Trump lingered with guardsmen. Despite delays and protocol concerns, the visit concluded with ceremonies, a state lunch, and tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.
