Judge Frank Caprio, known as “the nicest judge in the world,” passed away at 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Famous for his compassion on Caught in Providence, Caprio became a symbol of kindness in justice.
Raised in Providence by an immigrant father who helped struggling families, Caprio was shaped by early lessons in empathy. He worked as a dishwasher and shoe-shiner while putting himself through school, eventually becoming a judge known for fairness and warmth.
His wife of 60 years, Joyce, was a quiet force behind his success. She encouraged him to bring his courtroom to TV, turning Caught in Providence into a global phenomenon.
Despite fame, Caprio remained deeply devoted to his family. He and Joyce raised five children and shared what he called an “amazing” life together. In his final days, he credited Joyce and their children as his greatest gifts.
Judge Caprio leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion, humility, and belief in the good in people.
