Iraq Mall Fire Kills 61, Many Women and Children, A devastating fire at the newly opened Corniche Hypermarket Mall in Kut, Iraq, has claimed at least 61 lives, most of them women and children. The six-story mall, open for just five days, was packed with families when the fire broke out late Wednesday—reportedly triggered by an air conditioner explosion on the first floor.

Flames quickly engulfed the building, trapping people on the roof. Rescue teams saved over 45 individuals, while search efforts continued into the night. Many victims suffocated in bathrooms, according to the interior ministry.

Dr. Nasir al-Quraishi, who lost five family members, recalled, “We went to escape the heat. Then the AC exploded, and we couldn’t get out.”

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered a full investigation. Legal action is being pursued against the mall’s owner and builder. The tragedy has reignited concerns over Iraq’s poor safety enforcement and failing infrastructure.

Three days of mourning have been declared.
