What It Means When a Dog Wears a Blue Vest, Leash, or Bandana

If you see a dog wearing blue gear like a vest or leash, it often means the dog is a service animal or in training, though there’s no official color code. These dogs help people with disabilities and shouldn’t be distracted.

Therapy dogs and service dog trainees may also wear blue, but therapy dogs don’t have the same public access rights. Sometimes, blue is just the owner’s color choice.

Other vest colors have meanings too:

  • Yellow – the dog needs space

  • Red – “Do Not Pet” or working dog

  • Green – dog in training or friendly worker

Recognizing these cues helps ensure working dogs are treated with respect.
