Emmy-Winning Actress Valerie Mahaffey Dies At 71 After Battle With Cancer

Valerie Mahaffey, known for roles in Young Sheldon, Desperate Housewives, and Northern Exposure, has died at 71 after battling cancer. Her death was confirmed by her publicist on May 30 in Los Angeles.

Her husband, actor Joseph Kell, said, “I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses.”

Mahaffey won an Emmy and earned praise for her memorable performances on stage and screen. Fans and colleagues remembered her for her warmth, wit, and ability to light up every role.

Born in Indonesia, she built a successful career in theater, TV, and film, including Seabiscuit, Sully, and French Exit. She is survived by her husband and daughter, Alice.

Her final work includes the upcoming film The 8th Day and Apple TV+’s Echo 3.
