Pope Leo takes his first popemobile ride and people are absolutely losing it

Crowds went wild in St. Peter’s Square today as Pope Leo XIV was seen riding through in the popemobile ahead of his formal installation as pontiff. The 69-year-old American, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, becomes the first U.S. pope in history and the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

Appointed just ten days ago, Pope Leo has already made waves with his social media debut, multilingual sermons, and return to traditional papal attire—including a striking gold cross seen in his official portrait. He’s also known for his notable Chicago accent, which he used while delivering parts of his first Mass in English—a break from custom that sparked both surprise and humor online.

Today’s inauguration includes the symbolic presentation of the Fisherman’s Ring and the pallium, marking the start of his papacy. Thousands gathered along the Via della Conciliazione, cheering as Leo greeted them from the open-air vehicle—despite tight security measures.

Seen as a moderate, Leo’s early messages have focused on social justice, migration, and the dangers of artificial intelligence. His name honors Pope Leo XIII, known for addressing the social upheaval of the Industrial Revolution.
