White House press secretary backs plans to cut federal spending

Democrats raised alarms after former President Donald Trump ordered a freeze on certain federal grants and loans, warning it could impact programs like Medicaid. The White House said the pause is temporary, aiming to align spending with Trump’s agenda.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that key programs like Social Security, Medicare, and welfare would remain unaffected. A leaked memo also stated aid given directly to individuals wouldn’t be cut.

However, a federal judge temporarily blocked the freeze just before it took effect. The White House responded by rescinding the memo to avoid confusion but confirmed that Trump’s executive orders on spending cuts remain active. More actions are expected to follow.
