Federal authorities have arrested Massachusetts State Representative Chris Flanagan on embezzlement charges, marking the second Democrat in the state facing federal charges this week.
Flanagan allegedly stole $36,000 from a former employer to fund his campaign, pay credit card debt, and buy personal items, including clothing and children’s toys. He also reportedly spent money on psychic services.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said Flanagan forged expense reports and misrepresented the stolen funds as campaign loans. His financial troubles began in 2021, including missed mortgage payments and heavy credit card debt.
Calls for his resignation came swiftly from Democratic leaders and Governor Maura Healey.
Earlier in the week, Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson also resigned after pleading guilty to bribery.
House Republicans are urging ethics proceedings if Flanagan does not step down voluntarily.
