Supreme Court Delivers Key Second Amendment Decision

The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a federal law banning firearms for individuals under domestic violence restraining orders, in an 8-1 decision. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, stating the ruling aligns with the nation’s historical approach to limiting firearm access for dangerous individuals. He clarified that modern regulations addressing public safety concerns are constitutional under the Second Amendment.

Justice Clarence Thomas was the sole dissenter. The decision is a significant victory for public safety, especially in light of concerns about gun violence in domestic abuse situations. This ruling also reaffirms that Second Amendment protections can be applied to contemporary issues.

The Court also declined to revisit a major defamation case, New York Times v. Sullivan. Amid these decisions, rumors about justices’ retirements, including Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor, have been downplayed.
