A Tiny Tree Was Discovered Growing Within A Man’s Lung

A 28-year-old patient arrived at the hospital with coughing and severe chest pain, but an X-ray showed nothing unusual. However, when doctors removed a lump, it turned out to be a tiny fir tree. It was discovered that the man likely inhaled a seed, which grew into a sapling in his lungs, causing irritation and symptoms. Scientists initially dismissed the story as unlikely, as plants typically need sunlight to grow, and this phenomenon was rare. Yet, similar cases have occurred, such as in 2010 when a Massachusetts man had a collapsed lung and doctors found a pea plant growing inside. This unusual occurrence was explained by the possibility that the man inhaled a pea instead of swallowing it, allowing it to sprout in his lungs.
