5 Ways to Tell if an Egg is Fresh or Rotten

Unsure if your eggs are fresh? Here are some simple tips to help you check and reduce food waste.

Supermarket eggs come with a use-by date, but eggs from a henhouse don’t. In France, eggs can’t be sold within seven days of their minimum durability date. You can safely store eggs in the fridge for up to one month past their use-by date, which is 58 days after laying. Proper storage helps maintain freshness and prevents mold.

To test an egg, start with a sniff. If it smells unpleasant, it’s expired. If it smells fine, you can still use it, like in an omelette.

Also, visually inspect the shell for cracks, mold, or discoloration. If the egg white or yolk looks blue, pink, or black, discard it. Stay safe and reduce waste by following these guidelines.
